Some title runs are built on the biggest budgets and the safest bets. This one was not. Dplus KIA arrived at the Esports World Cup as a team reportedly owed a month of wages, with the organization itself up for sale and money trouble hanging over everything. On Sunday night in Paris they beat Karmine Corp 3-0 and lifted the trophy. It is hard to picture a more unlikely champion.

The final that never became a contest

Karmine Corp had the room. A French team playing a grand final in Paris, they drew first blood in Game 1 through Yike in the top lane, and the crowd roared. Then the game settled, and so did the pattern for the whole series. DK played through the map rather than the scoreboard, stacking dragons, taking Barons, and turning every Karmine Corp move into a reason to swing bigger. Game 2 closed out around the 33 minute mark. Game 3 barely lasted that long, with Lucid, ShowMaker and Smash sprinting to a lead reported to be near ten thousand gold by 24 minutes. Three maps, no comebacks, and a scoreline that flattered nobody but the winners.

A bracket that ate its favorites

If the final felt one-sided, the road to it was pure chaos. The two teams almost everyone expected to be lifting the trophy were gone before Sunday. Gen.G, going for a third Esports World Cup in a row, lost to DK in the semifinals. T1 lost to Karmine Corp. The LPL had been knocked out even earlier, with DK beating tournament favorite Bilibili Gaming and KC taking down AG.AL. What was billed as a clash of superpowers ended as a final between the two teams that had spent the week playing spoiler.

Why this one will be remembered

Take the wins on their own and DK's run is impressive. Add the backdrop and it becomes something people will talk about for a long time. Reports throughout the event described players owed roughly a month of salary while their organization worked through a sale, and DK went as far as publicly apologizing for the unpaid wages. This is the old DAMWON core, world champions back in 2020, a giant that had slipped and had every excuse to fold. Instead they showed up in Paris and won the whole thing. None of the noise off the stage ever reached the Rift.

Heartbreak, and real pride, for Karmine Corp

There is something for Karmine Corp to hold onto here, even if it did not feel like it on the night. No Western team has ever gone further at an Esports World Cup, and they did it at home, in front of their own fans. Speaking to Sheep Esports after the game, Caliste captured the mood: "All of this happened in front of our fans, so we are obviously very disappointed to have let them down." They leave as runners up, with the loudest crowd of the tournament behind them, while the trophy travels back to Korea.

Where it leaves us

No team from outside Korea or China has won an Esports World Cup yet, and 2026 kept that record intact. Almost everything else about it broke the script. The favorites fell, the LPL missed the final, and the champions were a team the odds and their own balance sheet had already counted out. On paper this bracket looked settled. In the end it was the one thing nobody should have believed.
