EWC 2026 Paris — Day 3 Recap: The MSI Champion Falls, and Dplus Kia's Miracle Run Continues

Day 3 moved into the knockout stage proper: four best-of-three quarterfinals across two waves, no more group-stage safety net. By the end of it, the tournament's presumptive favorite was swept out in straight games, one team survived the day's most dramatic reversal, another extended an underdog story that started on Day 2, and the final four locked in without a single LPL team left standing.

Hanwha Life Esports vs T1 — the MSI champion falls, 0-2

HLE arrived as the form team of the tournament — Group D winners, and still riding the identity that made them MSI 2026 champions. T1 ended that story in two clean games. Game 1 wasn't close: T1 closed it out in 22:59 on a 21-4 kill count, with Peyz's Ezreal running a 12/0/5 KDA and over 23K damage. Game 2 was shorter and just as one-sided, Doran's Renekton building a double-digit-thousand gold lead behind a much-improved Phase.

The context makes this more than a routine upset. HLE actually holds the more recent domestic edge over T1 — they won their last LCK series 3-1 in June, in what amounted to a Road to MSI final. Across four LCK series this year the head-to-head sits dead even, 6-6 on maps. None of that carried over into a neutral international Bo3: T1 simply looked like the sharper team on the day. Domestic form is context, not a guarantee — HLE are out at the quarterfinal stage.

Gen.G vs JD Gaming — down 4-14 in kills, and still 2-0

This was the day's most dramatic game. In Game 2, JD Gaming built what looked like a finished lead — Gen.G found themselves down 4 kills to 14. Gen.G didn't blink: they clawed the deficit back down, took over the map, and closed out the series 2-0 anyway. It's the kind of scoreline that should end in a loss, and didn't — a real statement about how this roster handles adversity, not just how it looks when it's ahead.

There's a lighter parallel here too: Gen.G also swept JD Gaming 3-0 at the First Stand 2026 group stage back in March. Different format, different stakes — that result is texture, not a predictor — but it's the second time in 2026 this exact matchup has gone clean in Gen.G's favor. The Game 2 comeback is the story; the head-to-head history is the footnote.

Karmine Corp vs AG.AL — the last Western team standing, 2-0

With G2 eliminated on Day 2, Karmine Corp are now the only non-LCK, non-LPL team left in the bracket — and they're doing it in front of a home crowd in Paris. The win over AG.AL was clean, 2-0, keeping KC's run alive into the semifinals.

Bilibili Gaming vs Dplus Kia — the underpaid roster does it again, 2-1

This is the story of the tournament so far. Dplus Kia are the same team that eliminated a freshly-recoached G2 on Day 2, playing under a reported month of unpaid salaries with an org sale still in progress. Against Bilibili Gaming they went down 1-1 and were reportedly deep behind on gold in the decider before turning it around to close out the series 2-1. Whatever is happening off the server, it isn't showing up on it.

BLG's exit means both of the LPL's representatives — JD Gaming and Bilibili Gaming — are out of the tournament. The final four is now three LCK teams and one LEC team.

Where things stand

Confirmed semifinalists: T1, Karmine Corp, Gen.G, Dplus Kia. Semifinals run July 18: T1 vs Karmine Corp (13:00 CEST) and Gen.G vs Dplus Kia (15:30 CEST — an all-LCK derby). The final on July 19 steps up to best-of-five.

Gen.G remain the tournament's most convincing team by a clear margin — the only side still unbeaten heading into the semis, and the only one that's had to prove it from behind. Everyone else has dropped at least one map to get here.
